How to decouple the theme for greater customization?

Basically I want to cutomize the theme much more than what shadowing allows. I have tried to use the theme as a plugin and local dependency, but neither works. Any suggestions?

Fork this repository, remove any themes and examples that are not relevant and point your deploy dir to the example then.
