import_data.sh service not running #45

I can run the import_data.sh script and it works as expected, but the service does not seem to be auto-uploading. I'm not familiar with how services work, and how they are triggered, compared to the older method of a cron job which was triggered on time. Do you have any ideas why my service might not be running or how I can troubleshoot it? What actually triggers the service to run? I am referring to the service as described in this section of the setup

all clear, you forgot to add parameter -l:
ExecStart=/home/jtuck/miscale2garmin/import_data.sh -l

Sorry for my ignorance, where could I find logs for the Export2Garmin service? I'm aware of the temp.log and the miscale_backup.csv, but my understanding of those is that they will only be revised/created if the import_data.sh file is executed.

I did a quick google and looks like I can maybe see logs via journalctl -u service-name.service e.g. journalctl -u export2garmin.service. I'll try that when I get access to the device again.

here is the result of running the aforementioned journalctl command. What triggers the import_data.sh file to be run or what triggers the service to run the import_data.sh script? Is it different than cron, that is triggered on a time schedule?

I'm not sure if this is helpful, but I weighed myself and then checked status of service and saved logs, then ran import_data.sh manually. It seems as if service is not triggering on it's own to run the import_data.sh script

What is the expected output of

sudo systemctl status export2garmin.service from instructions

You can check if export2garmin service works sudo systemctl status export2garmin.service or temporarily stop it with command sudo systemctl stop export2garmin.service.

gotcha well that seems to help identify the issue then, my result shows the service inactive (dead). I tried to renable and start the service, it looks like it ran but then the service is inactive.

all clear, you forgot to add parameter -l:
ExecStart=/home/jtuck/miscale2garmin/import_data.sh -l

🤦‍♂️ yikes! So sorry about that, that's silly. Thank you for the help and apologies for the time wasted. Makes sense now, what exactly does that -l optional command do, I'm guessing it helps the service stay alive?

The -l parameter causes the import_data.sh script to execute in a continuous loop, without this parameter it will execute once - for debug purposes.
