Ockam isn't compiling for me. At first, it was an error with subtle not being declared in vsss-rs. I added subtle as a dependency myself, but then other stuff started breaking. The most recent version that works is 0.19. It seems to be an issue with vsss-rs, but I'm not sure how to fix it, as vsss-rs's also fail to compile.

Thanks for letting us know, @squili ! We confirm that vsss-rs v1.1.1 is breaking the build, we're going to roll out release with version v.1.1.0 pinned.

@squili Version v.1.1.1 of vsss-rs should be deleted from crates.io as of now. Could you run cargo update in project directory and retry building it?

I assume you're working through this guide and get the above error at the setup step.

This is likely because the following command assumes a Unix-like shell (We should add instructions for Windows)

cargo new --lib hello_ockam && cd hello_ockam && mkdir examples &&
  echo 'ockam = "*"' >> Cargo.toml && cargo build

There are two ways to proceed:

Use a Unix-like shell on Windows - Windows Subsystem for Linux or GitBash
In any of those terminals. The above command would work as expected.
Do what the above command is doing manually
a. Create a new cargo project cargo new --lib hello_ockam
b. Open the project directory hello_ockam in your editor
c. Inside hello_ockam create a new directory called examples
d. Edit the file Cargo.toml inside hello_ockam and add ockam = "*" to the dependencies section of the Cargo.toml file
e. Run cargo build inside the hello_ockam directory

Both links (and subsequent attempt to copy/paste the url) take me to a 404 not found error page. Do you know if this documentation has been moved? If so, would it be possible to get an updated link/url? I am trying to understand, and additional instructions/documentation would be very helpful.

@Songtronix in the Cargo.toml file if you change ockam = "*" to ockam = "0.46.0" it should start working.
We're investigating what may have broken in the latest version 0.46.0

I ran into the same issue when following the getting started guide. One weird thing is that it do work if you specify the dependency to point to the explicit sha for the 0.47.0 tag on git

ockam = {git = "https://github.com/ockam-network/ockam.git", rev="b50149e4b23a5247922d6622b8ba9815a47c970e"}

I'm new to rust/cargo, but this seems off: ockam_channel 0.42.0 list ockam_core ^0.46.0 as dep, but that's not what appears on git

Hi ghost! Could you please share what steps did you follow? It can also be helpful to know what version you are using (run cargo tree --depth 1 | grep ockam).

Try the following and let me know if it works on your end.

In one terminal execute the responder. This is the listener service that will respond to the initiator so you must leave it running.

cargo run --example 04-routing-over-transport-responder

You should see something like:

In another terminal execute the initiator. It will send a message to the responder, wait for a response and shut down.

cargo run --example 04-routing-over-transport-initiator

When you are done, you can shut down the responder.

I am trying to do this lab. Installed rust successfully,
Trying to run
cargo new --lib hello_ockam && cd hello_ockam && mkdir examples &&
echo 'ockam = "*"' >> Cargo.toml && cargo build

First it did not allow this as cargo needs to be installed, so used "sudo apt install cargo" to install successfully.
Then run this - cargo new --lib hello_ockam && cd hello_ockam && mkdir examples &&
echo 'ockam = "*"' >> Cargo.toml && cargo build

Says --lib is not available(see below screenshot)

What should I do next to get this step completed?

Thank you. --bin creates a different king of project.

We don't currently support old rust versions. The current rust version is 1.59 .. could you upgrade to something recent?
The easiest way to do that is using rustup.

The old rust version will likely not work in other ways even after you get over the first hurdle.

How do I sign a commit with a PGP key? When I search how to do this the only results I get are how to sign with a GPG key. Additionally if I already pushed commits to my fork that were not signed how do I redo that?

GPG is the free software version of PGP. Sign with a PGP or GPG key means the same thing.

Github has a good guide here on signing commits.

To handle the commits you've already pushed, try something like this:

git rebase --exec 'git commit --amend --no-edit -n -S' -i develop
git push --force

I may have just had to commit it on krypton since I set that up.

Hey @tko85 👋 From the error it seem the container image that you're using doesn't have a C compiler which Rust needs to compile the code:

A few ways to fix might be:

use the official rust images
https://hub.docker.com/_/rust/
try installing rust and related tools into the image using rustup
curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -sSf https://sh.rustup.rs | sh
install a c compiler and try again .. but you maybe missing other related tools.
