So far the way to truncate a string is:

{strip}{$varname}{/strip}
(# trim("{$varname}") #)

I'm thinking of implementing a variable modifier, but it remains to be seen if it is really necessary and good.

ltrim: {-varnme}
rtrim: {varname-}
trim: {-varname-}
trim: {trim:varname}
trim: {$varname:trim}
