In the Windows workflow the FeatureBasedLaunchTest recently started to fail with the following error sometimes.

An internal error occurred during: "Load Target Platform".

Throw exception in MinimalState::addBundle if the model wasn't installed

The exception is an attempt to shed some light in the real cause of the
problem that's causing some tests fail and it simply replaces an obscure
NPE that's happening anyway.

I've been trying to reproduce the error to no avail.
For what I see, the cause is "pretty clear": the method org.eclipse.pde.core.plugin.ISharedPluginModel.getInstallLocation() says in its JavaDoc:

Returns: bundle description if this is an OSGi plug-in, or null if the plug-in is in a classicformat.

The method org.eclipse.pde.internal.core.MinimalState.addBundle(IPluginModelBase, boolean) is not prepared to handle the case where null is returned.

The tricky part for me (I'm not familiar with this code) is:

  • Was this an omission or is the problem that a plug-in in "classic format" even makes it inside the method?
  • If it's OK to accept plugin-ins in "classic format" in the method, how do we handle them? Do we skip them (if (model.getInstallLocation() == null) return;) or how do we handle them?

How about improving the error message to try and shed some light into the real issue? --> #849

This one is going to be a tough one: I just ran the whole test suite AllLauncherTests with a conditional breakpoint and there is no model containing the word seven in it (The condition I used is model.toString().contains("seven")) which means the test is system-dependent.

I bet the problem lies in the TP being used by the tests, it probably differs from mine. My hypothesis is that the list of included plugins is different in both systems.

Does anyone have an idea on how to test this hypothesis?

Throw exception in MinimalState::addBundle if the model wasn't installed

The exception is an attempt to shed some light in the real cause of the
problem that's causing some tests fail and it simply replaces an obscure
NPE that's happening anyway.
