Hello, I installed Linux Mint 20.3 Mate 64 bit on a Dell Vostro 3700.
Installing Nvidia driver led me to a black screen. The problem was resolved after I install nvidia-prime. It now works like a charm.
So, my point is : the nvidia-prime package should be installed automatically when switching to proprietary driver.

nvidia-prime is recommended by the nvidia driver package, it should be installed automatically along with it and nvidia-settings.
