Try slicing my heart box: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:44579, first normally, then again after you rotate it 90 degrees around the Z axis. You'll find one of those two orientations comes with first layer bridging for the top that goes the wrong way (try printing them both to see that it makes a pretty huge difference).
SF does a pretty poor job of this, but Slic3r does it pretty well. Perhaps you can look at their code?
