Description

Specular objects go black when the camera gets close.

Reproduction steps

  1. Set Preferences > Graphics > Quality and Speed to High, or toggle Mirrors on in Advanced Graphics Preferences.
  2. Look at the sphere at secondlife://Aditi/secondlife/Rumpus%20Room%204/85/167/23
  3. Zoom in close to the sphere.

Observed: The sphere turns black.
zoomed in

Expected: The sphere should not turn black. As is seen when the camera is zoomed out a bit.

Also reproduced on Windows. Seems to occur when enabling Mirrors in Advanced Graphics Settings

FWIW, this also repros on Linux. This is definitely tied to enabling mirrors, as disabling mirrors restores the expected behavior.

This issue has been linked to a Canny post: Reflections turn black when zooming in close 🎉

I've noticed this same thing happening on the latest FSBeta (7.1.11.76486) on Windows10 this evening (just downloaded it), but with objects that I was NOT zoomed in on and for some that weren't even close to me or my camera. They also showed some of the highlights like in the sphere pics posted here (some of the items it happened with were mesh jack o lanterns and you could still make out some of their smiling faces while they were black). It was just temporary and they went back to looking proper with a change in camera angle/scroll of my mouse wheel/change of avatar position. It also occurred with a mesh item I was wearing at the same time.

Setting to In QA to verify in another round of testing

Passed QA.
Verified on the Second Life Release 7.1.12.12682568132 (64bit) on Win10/OSX in the scope of IQA#423.

Also, the "Mirrors" checkbox should be unchecked by default for all graphics presets according to secondlife/viewer/issues/2345.
