Big rewrite and pending changes

For a while we've (about 2 years?) been hearing about some big rewrite and that has been preventing existing PRs from being merged. I do understand there's a lot of work being done in that regard behind the scenes and I think that the main issue is exactly that that work is not visible.

Since there aren't many contributors the work takes longer but the work not being visible and having pending PR for long periods of time doesn't welcome new contributors and can even drive them away.

I'd like to propose that these changes would be made visible in separate branches and issues open for the remaining work so people willing to contribute can do so.
