Event Aggregation Notes

Michael Wood edited this page Jun 24, 2014 · 5 revisions

SHC should aggregate ICS feeds, as well as output a combined ICS feed.

SHC events should display date, location, title, description, and an optional ticket/register link.

SHC curators / admins should be able to add new ICS feeds.

SHC curators should be able to link / combine / de-dupe events.

SHC should generate an events page of all upcoming events.

SHC events should be able to be filtered by tag.

SHC events should be searchable by keyword.

Sources & Platforms

Timely is an event / calendaring platform. Their front end is currently built on top of WordPress. A good choice for curating events.

Calagator is a successful event list in Portland, OR. We ran it in Vancouver at vancal.pixelcrafters.ca for a while, but it ended up being overrun by spam, plus its meetup etc. aggregation code didn't work reliably.

Meetup

TO DO Link to Meetup API

Startup Digest

TO DO talk to SD folks, AFAIK curating events is pretty manual / annoying at the moment. Might use SHC code so that they can curate events & push to mailing list easily?

Eventbrite

TO DO more of a source for events?

Google Calendar

Many people manually maintain shared / public Google Calendars to aggregate events. Downsides are that the events are largely invisible to search -- including lack of permalinks to events. Also, the "source" event info needs to be just put in the description field. Like Timely, might be used as a backend for curation in the form of SHC consuming .ics feeds.

Plancast

TO DO might be interesting to track attendance / show "I'm going" stats. Check if it's going to stick around.

A local Vancouver, BC startup and event management platform. Has a robust API and would love to help other local startups.
