Off-grid Communication

Reticulum Network

"Reticulum is the cryptography-based networking stack for building local and wide-area networks with readily available hardware. Reticulum can continue to operate even in adverse conditions with very high latency and extremely low bandwidth.

The vision of Reticulum is to allow anyone to operate their own sovereign communication networks, and to make it cheap and easy to cover vast areas with a myriad of independent, interconnectable and autonomous networks. Reticulum is Unstoppable Networks for The People."

How to Make a Faraday Bag

A Faraday bag is a simple, portable enclosure that blocks electromagnetic fields, preventing electronic devices inside from sending or receiving signals. It's useful for protecting your devices from tracking, hacking, or unwanted communication. Below is a step-by-step guide to making your own Faraday bag.

Materials Needed

Aluminum foil (heavy-duty preferred)

Alternative: Copper or nickel mesh, which offers enhanced shielding and durability.

Alternative: Conductive metallic fabric or Faraday fabric for a more durable and flexible bag.

Plastic Ziploc bag or other durable, sealable plastic bag

Alternative: Mylar bag or any other airtight, non-conductive pouch for better sealing.

Duct tape or conductive tape (for reinforcement and sealing edges)

Alternative: Aluminum or copper tape for a more secure, conductive seal.

Scissors (for cutting foil or fabric)

Optional: Velcro strips or zip ties (for creating a reusable closure)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Plastic Bag

Start by selecting a plastic Ziploc bag that fits your electronic device. This bag will serve as the inner layer, providing basic protection and ensuring the foil doesn't come into direct contact with your device.

Step 2: Wrap with Aluminum Foil

Cut a piece of aluminum foil large enough to completely cover the plastic bag. The foil should extend at least 2 inches beyond the edges of the bag on all sides. Place the plastic bag in the center of the foil.

Carefully wrap the foil around the plastic bag, making sure the entire surface is covered. Ensure there are no gaps or holes in the foil, as this would allow signals to penetrate. For better protection, consider wrapping the bag in two or three layers of foil.

Step 3: Seal the Edges

Once the bag is wrapped in foil, press down firmly on all edges to seal them. You can use duct tape to reinforce the seams and ensure a tight seal. Make sure no part of the plastic bag is exposed through the foil.

Step 4: Test Your Faraday Bag

To ensure your Faraday bag is working correctly, place a mobile phone or another wireless device inside, seal it up, and try calling or sending a message to the device. If the bag is effective, the device should not receive any signals.

Important: For maximum effectiveness, avoid handling the bag too much, as frequent use can cause the foil to tear or weaken. Regularly check the bag for damage and replace the foil as needed, store the Faraday bag in a safe place when not in use to prevent damage. For larger devices, scale up the materials and ensure a snug fit.
