My preferred build order:

1. MAX3237.
2. Check for shorts between the pins on the LM1117 with a multimeter.
3. LM1117.
4. Ceramic capacitors.
5. Resistors.
6. Diode (optional, USB only)
7. Tantalum capacitors.
8. Tactile switch.
9. Power pin header and/or USB socket.
10. Power up. Check voltage. Check reset pulled low when switch is pressed.
11. ESP-12E/F.
12. Power up. Check blue light flashes on ESP12 module. Check it flashes again after reset pressed.
13. Remaining pin headers.
14. Trial run programming.
15. D-sub connector.
